The game's purpose was to be an evolved form of what GTA tried to do but didn't capitalize on, by creating an "urban playground" environment where you can do anything you want, your way, no restrictions, no limitations. I just like thinking about the different types of things Saints Row could do. Seems like you and I are in the minority, but it's nice to see someone appreciates the idea. The fact is it adds an additional level of depth to gameplay, it adds enjoyment, which is what gaming is about. I'm sure we could name many things nobody "needs". You probably don't need video games, but you play them because you enjoy them. Nobody needs games about killing people, but they're there. Nobody needs insurance fraud, but it's there. Nobody needs septic avenger, but it's there. So how would having a love interest be any different? I wonder. You can change your gender however many times you want, yet they don't have a canon gender. The boss is not much of a real character anyway (they don't have a name or set appearance), but more of a vessel for the player to progress the story through. A shoehorned mechanic would be the ability to swim underwater for 30 seconds, which serves no benefit to the player. A lover would essentially be like a homie, but with an elevated status and special functions. A mechanic is only "shoehorned" if it doesn't fit within the scope of the game's design. They're available if the player wants to reap its benefits. The idea would be that it's an optional mechanic available to the player, much like buying a crib or store. It's an evolution of the "Ho-ing" mechanic from SR2. If you miss, the meter drops further, miss too many and the fun stops all together. The chorus section is when the Pleasure Meter intensifies, so hitting the notes will be even more important.

An S-Rank results in their happiness remaining at 100% for a longer period of time, and they will buy you special gifts (rare clothing, jewelry, etc.) To make them tap out, you have to go for consecutive rounds or you might get lucky the first time.

When you miss a note, they will say a range of funny lines expressing their frustration in ways that match their personality. The goal is to hit as many successful notes until the song ends or until they tap out, which results in an S-Rank. During this session, you could play a guitar hero style mini-game featuring a random song or something specific to their taste. Once their happiness reaches a good percentage, you will be invited to spend the night. Sometimes it's your pick, other times it's theirs. They will have dialogue options so you can choose what to do together. Maybe they like eating at Freckle Bitch's, shopping at Branded, joy riding, pimping out rides, etc. Boss increases their happiness by having dates.
